When it comes to self-care, sometimes getting your head right means getting away for a while. But a “reset” trip doesn’t have to mean beach breaks or camping trips - if you’re looking for something different, there are plenty of inspiring cities across the country that can help you to refresh and re-center.
Eugene, Oregon
Consistently ranked amongst the best places in the US to live, Oregon’s “Emerald City” is home to all kinds of art, sports, and recreational opportunities. On Saturday, there are weekly farmers’ markets, live music at a number of venues or you could take part in one of the many annual cultural events (such as the Oregon Festival of American Music, or the Eugene/Springfield Pride Festival). You’ll find a stark contrast in weather depending on the season, so make sure you’re visiting during the Spring or Summer months.
Jackson, Wyoming
Located out near the Mountain West backcountry (but not quite in it), Jackson often flies under the radar as one of the state’s cleanest, friendliest, and most relaxing getaway destinations. From a base in Jackson, you can easily reach any one of the Teton County ski areas (Jackson Hole Mountain, Snow King Mountain, or Grand Targhee) and you’re within driving distance of the Grand Teton National Park or the mighty Yellowstone National Park. If you’re looking for arts and culture, you’ll find incredible music festivals, architecture, and the famous National Museum of Wildlife Art. You may also recognize it as the inspiration for a key location from the popular 2020 video game The Last of Us Part II.
Silver City, New Mexico
Although less well known than New Mexico’s largest city, Albuquerque, or its capital, Santa Fe, the mysterious Silver City is an explorer’s paradise. Here, you’ll find all manner of old west saloons, family-run restaurants, and (for those willing to explore outside of the box) a number of neighboring ghost towns. New Mexico has a generally pleasing climate but much of the region is desert, so pack blankets and sunscreen for cold nights and blistering heat waves.
Denver, Colorado
Colorado’s famous, historical, and sprawling capital city not only makes for a refreshing vacation spot, but it could also prove an idyllic destination for those looking to relocate. In a 2016 survey, it was voted the USA’s best place to live and boasts a thriving, diversified economy with major industry clout in aerospace, healthcare, and financial services. It also plays host to plenty of affordable accommodation options - just be certain to narrow down your search for Denver apartments, specifying desired amenities, number of bathrooms/bedrooms, and your price budget. Some listings even include 3D tours so you can view properties from afar.
Fredericksburg, Texas
The third corner of the triangle, between Austin and San Antonio, is Fredericksburg - so-named by the German immigrants who moved here in the 1800s. It is considered amongst the best destinations in the country for wine and, as you’re sipping on a Reserve Red, you’ll likely be treated to a view of the county’s many sprawling lavender fields. Whilst you’re here, be sure to check out the fascinating historic district and make use of the varied shopping opportunities.
There’s nothing like a city break for giving you a new sense of perspective. Although nature is cleansing, it’s often people from whom we learn the most. For this year’s vacation, consider jumping into a new culture and see where the streets take you.
